would clean previous GoPro Hero lenses by licking them. The lens cover has been improved to shed water much better than previous versions. The front and rear screens are the same, but with much snappier and more responsive touch response thanks to the new GP2 pocessor. Luckily, a small piece of black gaffers tape or a Sharpie will take care of the blue showing through. When GoPro’s had a black label, clients didn’t mind leaving them in as much since they were less noticeable.

For online editors like me, I paint out or remove cameras from TV shows all day long. Labeling on the outside of the Hero 10 are now in bright blue - I personally liked the black-low key logo. Physically, the GoPro Hero 10 Black is the same size as the Hero 9 Black but weighs 5g less (Hero 10 is 153g vs Hero 9, which is 158g). There are a ton of updates but I’m only going to go over a few that pique my interest: 5.3k60fps (actual 5.3K resolution is 5312×2988, for those wondering) /4K 120fps/2.7k240fps 23 megapixel RAW/JPEG still images HyperSmooth 4.0 stabilization new GP2 processor 3D noise reduction and improved Local Tone Mapping 1080p live streaming (through GoPro subscription) improved transferring of files: auto-cloud upload, wireless offload and new wired transfer to phone. In fact, the packaging is really just a case – and it’s great. This includes an environmentally friendly (and plastic-free) packaging, two batteries, updated tripod, mounts and more. The Hero 10 Black is available now for $399.98 with one-year of GoPro subscription, or for $499.99 without a subscription.

But now, with the Hero 10 Black, GoPro has raised the bar once again. Then came the GoPro’s mystifying HyperSmooth stabilization technology, and I was all in. If you always have a phone in your pocket that produced nice-looking stills and videos, why do you need another camera? GoPro really needed to come up with something groundbreaking in order to differentiate themselves. Back when GoPro was offering the Hero 7 and 8, I was on the fence because I saw the iPhone and Galaxy phones coming straight for GoPro’s market share. To be honest, I am a sucker for GoPro cameras, but that wasn’t always the case.

But for GoPro fans, September means something else: the release of a new version of the GoPro Hero actioncam, and this year brings us the Hero 10 Black. For some, September means back to school, the start of football season and pumpkin spice lattes.
